Tommye McClure Scanlin ~ artist and teacher ~ tapestry and other things ~ Dahlonega, GA, USA
I am an artist who observes and responds to my surroundings for inspiration. My primary artistic medium is handwoven tapestry, an ancient method of working with fibers to create images. As I seek images and ideas to interpret into tapestry I experience my surroundings a closely as I can. Photographs, sketches, paintings, and writings all are part of the research I put into my work.
I have been living in the southern Appalachians most of my life and so my surroundings are filled with natural forms of woods, streams, and fields. My eyes are frequently drawn to the myriad details of the landscape and many of my tapestries are based on aspects of those details, simplified and enlarged in a weaving.

What happens within the large areas (metapatterns?) is so appealing. I love watching this piece grow.
ReplyDeleteI like the thought of these areas containing metapatterns--thanks for mentioning that!

Tommye, what method are you using to create such crisp vertical lines? I've got a section of tapestry that I've woven, unwoven, rewoven, and unwoven, because I just can't seem to get a nice crisp line.
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Erin
Erin,
ReplyDeleteIf you mean the single warp line as seen in one of the detail photos, I'm sewing as I wrap, catching the warp next to the warp I'm wrapping every other time I go around the warp with the weft. It's a method of sew as you go for joining vertical slits that I learned from Archie & Susan. Susan has an article about it on their website (link to their website is at the left in my blog).
I've also got some pick and pick stripes in some areas.

Many thanks, great resource. I love your new tapestry, can't wait to see it finished.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing the photos of your work. I love learning from the detail one can get with cameras these days. I also was interested in your outlining, as I am trying to get some definition in a tapestry I am working on. Beautiful tapestry, can't wait to see the finished product
