More about Because of Memory...

Why "Because of Memory" as title for the stones tapestry?  The main reason for this is from a quote that's found on Lillian E. Smith's grave marker that I showed in photo in this post from last year.  In the post I was writing about the painting I was beginning based on photos I took of the chimney ruin at the Lillian E. Smith Center and beside which Ms. Smith is buried.

Another reason for the title is that I feel stones hold the memory of the earth's life.

Off the loom, at last

I was able to cut off the tapestry this evening.  It's laying out on the floor of the studio now, resting overnight as am I.

Tomorrow the task of tidying up the back and finishing the ends begins.  That will be followed by doing the hanging method.  The piece is quite heavy so I may weave a band on which to sew the velcro that I'll attach to the back.  I've done that several times for larger tapestries, using my floor loom to weave a band of cotton seine twine in an almost warp faced weave, making it as wide as I want.  I use the smallest seine twine I have, setting it at about 20 epi.

The photo has more blue in it than the tapestry does... the incandescent lights tonight are effecting it, I think.  Maybe the camera is reading blue from the blanket I put on the floor to lay it on, too.  I'll be glad to see it hanging because I really can't yet tell how it looks!  I think I like it.

SOON!

Lots of inches in between the top (above) and the bottom (below).  I'm looking forward to seeing what those inches look like.

...all fall down...

Ring-a-round the rosie,
A pocket full of posies,
Ashes! Ashes!

We all fall down.

That's what I did at my studio the other day.  I took a tumble down several of these stairs, landing on my back.  Quite suddenly and hard.  Hurt like hell.  But nothing was broken and my injuries are only bruises, a few minor scrapes, aching muscles and hurt feelings.  The tapestry weaving has slowed down a bit because of this fall.  My goal of finishing yesterday was delayed.  Maybe today.

Here's where I left it yesterday afternoon:

And the end is even closer now!

Soon!  Today--no.  Tomorrow?  Maybe.  By Sunday, surely by Sunday.
