Tommye McClure Scanlin ~ artist and teacher ~ tapestry and other things ~ Dahlonega, GA, USA
I am an artist who observes and responds to my surroundings for inspiration. My primary artistic medium is handwoven tapestry, an ancient method of working with fibers to create images. As I seek images and ideas to interpret into tapestry I experience my surroundings a closely as I can. Photographs, sketches, paintings, and writings all are part of the research I put into my work.
I have been living in the southern Appalachians most of my life and so my surroundings are filled with natural forms of woods, streams, and fields. My eyes are frequently drawn to the myriad details of the landscape and many of my tapestries are based on aspects of those details, simplified and enlarged in a weaving.

Looking at it today I'm thinking I prefer it as a 3-part, and not separated. Strange!
ReplyDeleteBut either way, it's fabulous.
Thanks for your thoughts! Looks much more coherent with warp ends hidden.
ReplyDeleteI was inclined to want this separated as two pieces at first, but I think I now like it best as one piece. There is repetition of the leaf shapes in the colored area, and the red lines in the upper portion lead the eye back and forth. While each area would read as a whole separated, neither would be as interesting as the piece is as one tapestry.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments, Kathy. It was quite shocking to see it at first. The longer I see it as it is, the more I like it.
ReplyDeleteI very much appreciate your vote of confidence for the piece to stay as it is! I can always separate the parts in the future if I want to. But once I make the cut, it can't be put back together (easily, at least)!
There's something to be said for going with what's not expected, I think. Pushing beyond the "safe" solution.
I also vote for leaving it together. I like it. Shocking is good after all!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Rebecca!
ReplyDeleteBTW... congratulations!!!!! 7-14-12
Wow, I had no idea what this would look like. It is so unexpected, arresting and lively!
