First month complete on tapestry diary; 11 more to go!

I've only missed four days during January with the tapestry diary. Those are the white "blanks" that are interspersed throughout the piece. I'm glad to have the 1st to look forward to tomorrow since I'll only have to weave one blip within a field of color. The growing days of the months cause me to have to think... sometimes, I'd rather just weave than think about how to weave my assignment.

Of course, you say... you made the assignment yourself so lighten up! Yep, I could do that and I may find myself doing that before 2009 is over. But right now, this is a young enough activity that I want to do it according to my self-imposed rules.

So... here's the month of January on the loom.

  1. if only i had your discipline, but then if i did i would probably make it even more controlled. Looks great BTW.

  2. Very interesting project. It's fun to make rules for yourself and see where it takes you. Right now it looks like a city, but I think that will change as it gets bigger.

  3. Discipline! That elusive trait. I try to trick myself into discipline and this is one more way I'm attempting it. But this is more fun than making myself write: "I will weave every day...." 365 times! No, let me take that back... writing that might be fun, too!!

And, yes, Janet, it does not look like a cityscape. And that's pretty funny since I live in a small town where the tallest building is two stories high. But the changes that will happen as it gets bigger can lead to more specificity of like-ness... or can become more non-objective, I think. Just can't anticipate where it will lead because that will be breaking one of the BIG rules of this particular game--just going doing whatever happens each day.

  4. Ha! Janet made the comment I was going to make! I, too, see a city. Like you are building yourself a PLACE, day by day. The city of Tommye-2009.

  5. Ha, indeed, Kathy! Hey, I like the "city of Tommye-2009!" Why not?! Or as one of the local wags here in Dahlonega puts it: "I'm a legend in my own mind!"

  6. I clearly have not been keeping up with your blog as I missed the start of this diary. I think it is a really neat idea. And I like what is happening.

  7. I love it! Did you post your rules on an earlier blog? I see the red line for January. Do you intend any other way of showing the next month - i.e. you have the number of markers match the date in many for January. Will you add something for the "2" of Feb? Just curious. It looks like great fun.

  8. Hi Jennifer,
Yes, I mentioned my "rules" somewhere. My postings have been few and far between lately as we're still slogging away in our house. But my rules, so far, are that I'll do 10 days across, use only yarn bits and pieces from past tapestry wefts, mark each day of the month with the number in some way (leads to lots of spots toward the end of the month), and top each day of the month off with a color. I'd used a red-orange for January but now have begun February with a black pass as topper. I guess a new rule is to put an ending pass for each day of the month as a different color per month. At least, that's the thinking right now!
Just wove about 1/2" today for the 2nd, not too much time to spend but 2 is an easy day.
