    The basting stitches are just big running stitches that are taken through to the cartoon at the back to hold it near the top edge of the weaving. I stitch close to the top to be able to see the cartoon more easily by holding it near the edge I'm weaving. These are clipped out as I proceed--none are included in the finished tapestry.
